Fish need oxygen, and so do the beneficial bacteria in your filter. Pond aeration adds oxygen to the water, which is especially important in summer, when warm water holds less of it, and in heavily stocked ponds.

Signs your pond needs more oxygen

Fish gasping at the surface, especially early in the morning, is a classic warning sign. Hot weather, algae blooms, heavy fish loads and fish medications can all lower oxygen levels.

Setup tips

Place the air pump above water level and out of the rain, and fit a check valve in the airline. Put the airstone in the deeper part of the pond for the best circulation. Clean or replace airstones when the bubbles get weak.
