Reeds, rushes and grasses give a pond or dam its natural look. Their upright leaves add height and movement, soften hard edges, and create the kind of habitat frogs, birds and dragonflies love.

These plants have dense root systems that take up nutrients from the water and help stabilise banks against erosion. Planted around a pond or dam, they help keep the water cleaner and give wildlife a safe place to shelter and breed.

Planting tips

Most rushes and grasses are marginal plants that like shallow water over their pots. Plant them in baskets on the marginal shelf of your pond, or straight into the muddy edges of a dam. Plant in groups for the most natural look, and cut back old growth in late winter.
