Bog Plants for Ponds

Bog plants love wet feet. They grow in waterlogged soil or very shallow water, which makes them perfect for the boggy edges of a pond, a wet corner of the garden or a purpose-built bog filter.

Where to use bog plants

Use them to blend your pond into the surrounding garden, to turn a soggy patch into a feature, or in a bog filter – a shallow planted bed that pond water flows through, where the plants and their roots help clean the water naturally.

Our bog plants

For height and flowers, choose Water Iris, True Water Canna, Water Orchid, Lizard's Tail and Dwarf Papyrus. Sweet Flag, Golden Sweet Flag and Variegated Sweet Flag add colourful, grass-like foliage, and Gardener's Garters and the Tassel Cord Rushes add texture. Australian natives like Swamp Goodenia, Swamp Mazus, Selliera, Shield Pennywort, River Buttercup, Water Ribbon and Nardoo make excellent low groundcovers.

Planting tips

Keep the soil constantly wet – bog plants won't cope with drying out. Use heavy soil rather than potting mix, and plant in groups for the best effect.
