A pond cover net is one of the simplest ways to protect your pond. It keeps autumn leaves out of the water and stops herons, kookaburras and other birds from taking your fish.

Why net your pond?

Keep leaves out: falling leaves sink and rot, releasing nutrients that feed algae and building up sludge on the bottom. A net in autumn saves a lot of cleaning.
Protect your fish: birds can quickly take fish from an open pond, especially in shallow water.

Choosing the right size

Measure the pond at its widest and longest points and choose a net that's bigger, so it overhangs the edge on every side and can be pegged down securely. If the pond is irregular in shape, go up a size.

Fitting tips

Stretch the net taut and peg it down well beyond the edge so animals can't get underneath. Support it above the water if needed so leaves don't sit in the water, and clear leaves off regularly. Check the net often if frogs, lizards or birds visit your garden, so nothing gets caught.
