Starting your first pond? Our beginner pond plants are the tough, forgiving plants we recommend to new pond keepers. They establish quickly, cope with a wide range of conditions and do a lot of the work of keeping your water clear.
The range covers the three groups every pond needs: oxygenators like Upright Water Milfoil, Pink Rotala, Water Hyssop and Brahmi; marginal plants like Water Iris, Bare Twig Rush and Gardener's Garters for the edges; and easy edibles like Vietnamese, Chocolate and Fine Leaf Water Mint.
Getting the mix right
For a balanced pond, follow our 3-2-1 rule: three oxygenators, two marginals and one flowering plant for every square metre of surface. Our Pond Plant Calculator works out the numbers for you, or grab a Pond Starter Pack for a ready-made mix.
Easy planting
Most of these plants arrive in a floating plant ring, so you can pop them straight into the pond. When you're ready, move them into baskets on your marginal shelf. Feed them during the warmer months and trim them back when they get too big.
