Pond Plants Used in Traditional Medicine

Many water plants have a long history in traditional medicine and folk remedies around the world. This collection brings together pond plants used in traditional medicine, so you can grow these fascinating plants in your own water garden.

Plants with a story

Gotu Kola and Brahmi have been used in Ayurvedic and Asian traditional medicine for centuries. Water mints have long been brewed as soothing teas, and Water Parsley, Vietnamese Water Mint, Kangkong and Water Garlic are used in traditional cooking and home remedies across Asia.

Beyond their history, these are attractive, easy-to-grow pond plants. Most are fast growers that help take up nutrients and keep your water clear.

A note on use

We share the traditional uses of these plants for interest only. We don't make health claims, and anyone thinking of using a plant medicinally should speak with a qualified health professional first, especially if pregnant or taking medication.

Growing tips

Grow these plants in baskets on a sunny marginal shelf and pick regularly to keep them bushy. Avoid chemical treatments in ponds where you grow plants to use.
