Marginal pond plants grow around the shallow edges of your pond, with their roots in water and their leaves and flowers above it. They soften the edge of the pond, link it to the rest of your garden, and give you height, colour and texture.
Just as importantly, marginals help keep your pond healthy. Their roots take up nutrients that would otherwise feed algae, and their leaves give frogs, dragonflies and fish shelter.
Our marginal plants
Choose from architectural plants like Dwarf Papyrus and Corkscrew Rush, flowering favourites like Water Iris and Water Canna, colourful foliage like Golden Sweet Flag, and edible herbs such as Water Celery, Water Parsley and Vietnamese Water Mint. We also grow a range of Australian natives, including Bare Twig Rush, Water Ribbon and Frog Grass.
How to grow marginals
Most marginal plants like their pots sitting just below the water surface. Plant them in baskets on the marginal shelf around the edge of your pond, or use the floating plant ring they come with to position them anywhere. Trim back old leaves in autumn, and divide plants every couple of years as they fill their pots.
