Frog Habitat Pond Plants

With many Australian frog species in decline, a frog-friendly pond is one of the best things you can do for local wildlife. Our frog habitat pond plants are chosen to give frogs what they need: shelter, places to breed and cover for tadpoles.

What frogs look for in a pond

Frogs like dense, layered planting. Tall rushes and grasses around the edge give adult frogs somewhere to hide and call from. Plants in shallow water provide spots to lay eggs, and submerged and floating-leaved plants shelter tadpoles as they grow. Shallow, sloping edges also help young frogs climb out.

Our frog habitat plants

Favourites include Frog Grass, Knobby Club Rush, Bare Twig Rush, Water Ribbon and Nardoo, many of them Australian natives. Our Frog Attracting Starter Pack is an easy way to get a good mix.

Tips for a frog-friendly pond

Plant generously, and leave some areas a little wild. Avoid chemicals and fertiliser runoff near the pond, and remember that most fish will eat tadpoles, so a separate fish-free pond or a well-planted area gives tadpoles the best chance. Be patient: frogs usually find a new pond on their own within a season or two.
