Floating Pond Plants

Floating pond plants spread their leaves across the surface of your pond, creating the classic water garden look. Their roots stay anchored in a basket of soil while the leaves float above, so they stay where you put them.

Floating leaves do more than look good. They shade the water, which helps keep it cool and reduces the sunlight that algae need to grow. They also give fish cover from birds and a cool place to rest on hot days.

Our floating-leaf plants

Alongside our hardy water lilies, you'll find Australian natives like Nardoo, Running Marsh Flower and native Marshworts (Nymphoides), which suit smaller ponds and add delicate flowers through summer.

How much cover do I need?

Aim to cover around half to two thirds of your pond surface with leaves once plants are established. That gives plenty of shade while still leaving open water for light and for you to see your fish.

Planting tips

Plant in wide baskets of heavy aquatic soil and lower them gently into still water. Our floating plant rings make it easy to position plants in deeper ponds. Read our guide to choosing floating pond plants for more tips.
