Edible Pond Plants

Your pond can be a kitchen garden too. Our edible pond plants grow happily in water or wet soil and give you a steady supply of fresh herbs and greens, while helping to keep your pond healthy.

What you can grow

Pick fresh leaves of Water Celery, Water Parsley and Rainbow Water Parsley for salads and soups. Grow Vietnamese, Chocolate and Fine Leaf Water Mint for cooking and drinks, Kangkong (water spinach) for stir-fries, and Water Garlic for a mild garlic flavour. For something different, try Water Chestnut, Lebanese Cress or Swamp Pepper.

Edible pond plants are fast growers, which makes them great at soaking up the nutrients that feed algae. Regular picking keeps them bushy and productive.

Growing and harvesting

Most edibles grow best in baskets on a shallow marginal shelf in a sunny spot. Harvest a little and often, and avoid using chemical treatments in ponds where you grow food. Always make sure you know what you're eating, and note that some plants, such as taro, must be cooked before eating.
