Choosing the Right Pump for Your Pond Filter

Your pond pump needs to be selected carefully to ensure the filtration system receives an appropriate flow rate.

When calculating the pump you need, remember that the actual flow at the filter will be affected by hose length, hose diameter and bends in the plumbing.

As a general guide:

• Every 1 metre of hose adds approximately 10cm of head height

• Reducing the hose diameter by one size can add approximately 1 metre of head height

• A 90° bend can add approximately 1 metre of head height

• A 45° bend can add approximately 50cm of head height

For this reason, don't choose a pond pump based solely on its maximum litres-per-hour rating. The pump's flow at the required head height is what matters when setting up your pond filtration system.
