About joints and the role of MarineFlex® in providing the building blocks for joint tissues
Cartilage and synovial fluid are two critical tissues of the joint. Like all tissues in the body, cartilage undergoes constant repair, and it has a huge capacity to synthesise its major components. In a normal healthy joint, the amount of cartilage matrix that breaks down during normal daily activity is the same as the amount of new cartilage that is produced to replace the degraded cartilage.
MarineFlex® contains high levels of natural glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), including chondroitin sulfate. GAGs play a major role in maintaining joint health because they are components of cartilage and synovial fluid. MarineFlex® is also an important natural source of glucosamine, another component of cartilage. Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate also inhibit cartilage breakdown.
About osteoarthritis and the role of MarineFlex® in ameliorating osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is an inflammatory disease in which cartilage breakdown exceeds cartilage synthesis, resulting in a progressive and permanent break down of cartilage in joints. Animals with arthritis suffer pain which is manifest as lameness, reduced mobility and, in companion animals, as a reluctance to rise.
Green lipped mussel and turmeric exert anti-inflammatory activity. For green lipped mussel, this activity is thought to be mediated by omega-3 fatty acids, while curcumin (the active component of turmeric) inhibits the production of inflammatory cytokines (chemicals in the body which promote the development of inflammation).
Among other factors, ‘oxidative stress’ is part of the disease process in osteoarthritis. Oxidative stress occurs when damaging free radicals accumulate because the mechanisms within the cell for eliminating them become overloaded. The turmeric in MarineFlex® Plus contains compounds called curcuminoids, the most important being curcumin. Curcumin has many beneficial effects, one of which is its antioxidant activity which helps to protect cells and tissues from the damaging effects of free radicals. The concentration of curcumin in the turmeric powder used in MarineFlex® Plus is 95%, whereas the average turmeric powder has a curcumin content of 3%.
Curcumin is also an immunomodulatory agent that supports a healthy immune system and has been reported to have other beneficial effects: protection of the liver from toxic compounds, protective effects on the cardiovascular and gastrointestinal systems, inhibition of platelet aggregation (clot formation), inhibition of cancer development and antimicrobial effects.
The bioavailability of curcumin
In addition to the natural fat content of MarineFlex® (from green lipped mussel), the bioavailability of curcumin is enhanced by the addition of optimal levels of the natural compound, piperine, to the product. Bioavailability refers to the levels of a compound in the tissues of the body (where the compound exerts its beneficial effects) relative to the given dose (amount ingested for an orally-administered compound). So if the bioavailability of a compound is increased, the levels of the compound in tissues are increased. Generally, the higher the level of the compound in a tissue, the greater the compound's beneficial effect.
