There is a wide variety to choose from but we suggest if you are starting out, less is more! As this photo to the left suggests, a simple planting of the variegated sweet flag with one other floating plant makes a statement. This pattern can be repeated throughout your terrestrial garden too as a way of reinforcing your garden style.     Why Choose a Feature Plant for your pond? Visual Impact: A unique plant adds depth, texture, and colour to your pond, making it a captivating centerpiece in your garden. Provide proper planting: Plant your feature plant in a suitable aquatic container or directly in the pond bed, ensuring proper depth and soil conditions.  Regular maintenance: Trim back overgrown foliage and remove any dead or decaying plant matter to maintain a healthy and aesthetically pleasing appearance. Find your focal point: Position your plant in the centre of your pond. This works well for formal sytle pond of any shape. Step back and see if this suits your pond from your vista. An alternative is to create a focal point in the left or right hand corner of your pond.  These plants offer a fantastic alternative to water lilies and here's why: Structure and Form: Dwarf Papyrus: Its feathery foliage creates a dense, upright structure that adds vertical interest and texture to the pond. Dwarf Umbrella Grass: The unique umbrella-shaped leaf clusters provide a distinct architectural element, adding a playful and whimsical touch. Variegated Sweet Flag: The upright, sword-like leaves with their striking variegation create a strong vertical line and a dynamic visual contrast. Height and Visual Impact: These plants  grow taller than many water lilies, creating a more dramatic presence in the pond - especially if growing in a large patio pond or sealed pot. Their unique forms and foliage colours draw the eye and make them stand out as focal points in the garden landscape. This is an easy trick to add instant structure to your water garden.   Beyond Flowers: While water lilies are prized for their flowers, these alternatives offer year-round visual interest. Their distinctive foliage provides constant colour and texture, even when not in flower. Versatility: These plants can be used to create a variety of effects: Massed plantings: Create a dramatic backdrop or a dense screen. Single specimens: Use as striking focal points. Mixed plantings: Combine with other aquatic plants for a diverse and dynamic display. By incorporating these plants into your pond, you can achieve a more dynamic and sophisticated look that goes beyond the traditional water lily aesthetic. They offer a unique blend of form, function, and visual interest, making them an excellent choice for Aussie ponds.   © weknowwatergardens 2025
