There is a wide range of plants that can grow in water gardens outside of water lilies and water Iris. If you’re new to water gardening then one to look out for is Corkscrew Rush (Juncus effusus cv. Spiralis). Corkscrew Rush takes its name from its interesting corkscrew-like foliage that is dark green in colour. The foliage will both spill to a radius of 50cm and some will stay upright to a height of 60cm. It is a slow-growing plant, that loves the heat so it is great for water gardens that have full sun. It is very versatile and can be planted in boggy conditions near the edge of the pond and is well suited to the floating plant ring that comes with all of the plants. Alternatively, Cork Screw Rush can be submersed to a depth of 2cm in the shallows of your water garden.

Cork Screw Rush can be frost tender so make sure it is protected in winter, place it in a cover pot, and bring it inside for winter. It will actually thrive indoors in a sunny spot on the window sill.
